Little Red Light

No doubt about it, Disney is for kids of all ages, even us old geezer type of kids. I know this because if a recent trip to the Magic Kingdom. Everybody there acts a little childlike at all the wonders Mr. Disney made for us. But what you may not know is that children can find wonders in the littlest things or the strangest places, even the restrooms.

For all you women reading this blog who are not familiar with the men’s room I will explain. The men’s room is a long room with urinals on one long wall with stalls on the other side. These urinals have an automatic flushing device which is controlled by a chrome plate on the wall with an red light in the center that lets the device know when one person leaves and another takes his place. When that happens, the urinals flush automatically. There is also a wing wall about four feet high that separates each urinal. This is to allow a modicum of privacy and protect against bad aims. You can see who is next to you when using the urinal, just not what they are doing. As if, you didn’t already know.

Being one of the “Old Geezer” I did drink a lot of coffee this day requiring me to visit these mens rooms often. At Disney, these restrooms are almost always filled to capacity. As soon as one person leaves, another one takes his place. The bad news here is that old geezers like me always take a little longer when using the urinal than the younger type of clientele. It was at one of these pit stops that I found myself standing between two boys. Not being a good judge of age, all I can tell you is that their heads came a little above the protective wing wall. That and I am almost certain they did not know each other.

For adults there is an edict involved when a man is using a urinal. Look straight ahead and do not talk. Do your business and get out of the way for the next guy. I was adhering to these rules when the boys stepped up to the urinals beside me. It goes without saying that we all have some type of peripheral vision that does allow us to see what is happening beside us even if we are concentrating on the tile wall in front of us. I knew they were there. I even noticed that the boy on my left leaned in and put his face very close to the wall. Yes, curiosity got the best of me and I looked to see what he was doing. He was looking into the little red light that controls the auto flush. As if there was some magic genie behind the wall that flushes the urinal and he could see this genie if he looked into the little red light. How cool that even in the restroom children can find wonder in the simplest things. Moments later the boy on my right did the same thing.

I couldn’t help but thinking for just a second that Mr. Disney wasted a lot of money. All he had to do was put a shinny red light on a wall and the kids would have been happy. Then again maybe not.

Things Are Going To Change

It is a new year and some of you may be wondering where I have been. Seems I have not posted to my Blog since this time last month. That is because I put a counter on the Blog and sure enough I was right. I am writing to nobody. That is not to say that the 10 or so people who did drop by are nobody, it’s just that I can’t be sure if I am wasting my time or not. Then I got thinking, I am writing this for my entertainment, not yours. Although, I have no problem with you being entertained by reading what I write. As a matter of fact, I wish you would encourage me a little. It is much more fun writing to an audience than sitting here and rattling on about nothing. So that must mean that the first change of the new year is that I am writing this blog to Nobody. If you are somebody and happen to have stumbled onto my blog by accident, you are now officially a Nobody, and one of my loyal readers.

I cannot speak to the other changes that will occur this year because I have no idea what they will be. I only know that things will change. Even if that change is only in our perception of how we see the things in front of us. Take our Jan. 2, 2009 trip to Epcot at Disney World. I spent most of the day seeing changes, or did I. Perhaps I spent most of the day comparing what I saw to what I remember seeing the last time I was there. Memory is a strange and wondrous thing that has little to do with reality. We remember more of what we feel than what we see. Since what I saw this day has been seen before, the feeling was different. I saw the same things as I saw before, I perceive it as change.

Do not get me wrong. Things do change. I am in the process of making changes to our web site as we speak. Then again, that site is an ongoing thing that is always in the throws of change. The only thing I know for sure is change is inevitable. No matter how many dollar bills I start out with, I always end up with nothing but change. You flip a coin if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Me And My Shadow

A friend told me he and his wife went on little Mini Photo Safari around their neighborhood but were running out of ideas of things to shoot. I suggested Shadows. After all shadows add depth, contrast, and help tell your story. Learning to use and control shadows will improve your pictures and make you a better photographer. After all, photographs started out as Black and White pictures. Every now and then, you might want to use your photo program to make one of your color pictures a B/W photograph. Notice how the light and shadow separates the three main subjects from the background and highlights the central subject of the man and boy.

Simple shadows add a third element to any picture. You can even make a figurine seem real. Had I used a flash to tell these stories you would have only seen a figurine of a pelican and wolves. Shadows placed them into their natural element.

Finding shadows and using them to complete your photograph can be tricky. Remember to keep shooting even after you get the shot you want so you can have choices when you sit down with your photo program. What looks good when you are out and about, may not always look the same once loaded into your desk top photo lab.

Shadows are only the use of light and dark areas of a scene to enhance a picture and help tell a story. Sometimes the shadow is more of a light thing than a dark thing. The really cool part of shadows is that you can add your own shadows and tell your own story better than you could without shadows.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK
